It was Ganesh Chandra Mullick who came over from Konnagar in Hooghly district to then Calcutta in around 1880 at his age of twenty. Having discovered a knack for sweet making very early in life, he came over to capital city of Bengal to try out his fortune. He dreamt of a sweet shop of his own. He opened a sweet shop in a hutment in Bhowanipore in 1885. North Calcutta then had many sweet shops. He visualized that fast growing South Calcutta would support a sweet shop where there was a scarcity of good sweet shop and there would be less competition. Bhawanipore was such an area in those days, just developing and expanding and was full of trees and jungles waiting to be cleared for expansion of Calcutta City. He was supported by his wife Lilavati Mullick in making sweets by hand. This shop was known as Ganesh's sweet shop. Today also, many old people know this shop as Ganesher Mistir Dokan.
